Khushi Pandey wins marathon match

KATHMANDU, April 1: Khushi Pandey advanced into the quarterfinals of the Fifth Kesha Group JTI Junior Open Tennis Championship on Monday as she battled back from the first set down to defeat Alsa Regmi in a marathon match that lasted for almost three hours.



Despite losing the closely contested first set, Pandey showed her tenacity to fight back to seal the second set in a tie-breaker and then held on her nerves to win the final set with an overall score of 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in their U-12 girls’ singles opener.[break]



In the other U-12 girls’ singles matches played at the Satdobato Tennis Complex, Utsavi Joshi handed a double bagel to Nima Roka while Medhavi Giri crushed Arya Prasain 6-1, 6-0 to secure their respective berths in the quarterfinals.



Saloni Tamang had an easy access to the last-eight as she received a walkover from her opponent.



In the U-12 boys’ singles category, Prashant Basnet, Utsav Khadka and Sulav Dhital won their respective matches to advance into the pre-quarterfinals. Basnet defeated Alex Shah, Khadka saw off Saharsha Chand and Dhital beat Utsav Thapa by an identical scoreline of 6-1, 6-0.



Likewise, Anjan Thing thrashed Pranav Khanal 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of the U-14 boys’ singles to make it to the quarterfinals.



Other players to secure the quarterfinal berths were Renjen Lama, Prashant Basnet and Samrakshak Bhushan Bajracharya.



Renjen Lama routed Anubhav Chakravarti 6-1, 6-1 while Prashant Basnet ousted Bivek Basnet 6-4, 6-2. Meanwhile, Samrakshak Bhushan Bajracharya edged out Satyap Ilme 6-2, 6-3.



In the U-9 boys’ singles section, Bardan Basnet edged past Satya Dhwoj Karki 9-8 and Abhi Joshi hammered Adit Maharjan 8-1 to advance into the quarterfinals. Samden Baidhya, Daniel Krishna Shrestha and Ranav Singh also secured quarterfinal berths after earning walkovers from their opponents.



In the U-10 boys’ singles, Samyak Bhushan Bajracharya thrashed Aryan Jung Shah 8-1, Rahul Singh beat Shreeyans Shrestha 8-5, Utsav Thapa defeated Aryan Giri 8-5 and Adit Subedi routed Pratham Manandhar 8-1 to secure their respective places in the quarterfinals.
