The rising number of Nepalis -- mainly sales girls -- working in Khasa has also made Nepali businessmen more comfortable in bargaining for price.

“We are trying our best to attract more Nepali customers and satisfy them ,” said Sonam Dolma Sherpa, a salesgirl working in Khasa. Most of the Chinese businessmen in Khasa have hired Nepali sales girls for better dealing with Nepali customers by ending the language barrier.

Bijaya Poudel, an official at Immigration Office, Tatopani, said around 1,500 Nepali youths, of whom around 100 sales girls, are working in different shopping centers and stores in Khasa.

“Chinese businessmen are interested in hiring Nepalis to attract more customers from Nepal. They have given employment opportunities to Nepali youths especially from the bordering VDCs,” said Poudel.

They are paid monthly salary ranging from Rs 6000 to Rs 16,000 depending on the nature of their jobs. Most of the youths getting employment in Khasa are from Tatopani, Phulpingkatti and Listi VDCs of Sindhupalchowk.

Pemba Sherpa, who has been working at a mobile shop, draws Rs 10,000 a month. She said salaries of workers would go up as their proficiency in Chinese language increases. Major tasks of Nepali workers in Khasa are to boost sales by attracting and dealing with customers.

Avenues for the employment of Nepalis in Khasa opened two years ago when the Chinese government initiated organized retail sales through shopping centers.

With the increasing number of Nepalis sales persons in Khasa, mistreatment to Nepali buyers by Chinese sellers has also been significantly reduced.

Prabin Dhakal who went to Khasa from Budhanilkantha in Kathmandu for shopping said employment of Nepalis as sales persons in Khasa has made it easier for Nepali traders to deal with the Chinese traders.
