According to a press statement issued by Nepal´s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, the leaders exchanged views on issues of mutual concerns with particular focus on democracy, peace process and upcoming Constituent Assembly election in Nepal. Khanal also appraised Ban of technical, political and legal aspects of the election preparations.
Khanal while appreciating the support extended by neighbors and international community including the UN also said the election scheduled for November 19 holds high significance to Nepal, the statement said. Khanal told Secretary Ban that a High Level Political Committee comprised of the leaders of major political parties has been working to bring various agitating political parties on board the election process. On the occasion, Secretary-General Ban appreciated the contribution of Nepal in UN peacekeeping missions. While expressing confidence that Nepal would continue similar support to the UN´s peacekeeping efforts, Ban appreciated the professionalism and courage of Nepali peacekeepers.
Khanal mentioned that the Istanbul Programme of Action was a landmark conference and as Nepal falls both in the LDC and LLDC categories deserves special attention of the international community in its development endeavours. He further mentioned about the decision of the Government of Nepal for graduation from LDC category by the year 2022.
Khanal thanked the secretary-general for his support through UN in Nepal´s peace process and mentioned that the peace process of Nepal is heading toward positive direction. He also briefly mentioned about the Commission on Disappearances and Truth and Reconciliation Commission which were currently sub judice.
UML leaders Bhim Rawal and Dr Bhismanath Adhikari Chargé d´Affaires a.i. of the Permanent Mission of Nepal Sewa Lamsal Adhikari, Khanal´s personal aide Ram Babu Adhikari and UN officials were present at the meeting.
