Madhu Kumar Marasini, joint secretary of International Economic Cooperation Coordination Division at the Ministry of Finance (MoF) and Hamad S Al-Omar, deputy director general of KFAED, signed the agreement on behalf of the Government of Nepal and the fund, respectively.
The main objective of the project is to facilitate irrigation support in the central and eastern development region by rehabilitating and extending existing Farmer Managed Irrigation Systems (FMIS). The project also aims t enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability by reducing poverty and improving the livelihood of the poor rural population.
According to MoF, the project will cover all 35 districts of central and eastern development regions.
The main components of the project include irrigation infrastructure improvement consisting of civil engineering works like extending the existing irrigation infrastructures in 50 FMIS, construction of about 250 canals, 20 weirs, 30 intake structures, about 2,000 small hydraulic structures and irrigation system management improvement and financial management system through training for about 50 for related stakeholders, according to a press release issued on Monday.
