Rs 20 million was raised on the first day after philanthropists Prem Bahadur GC who donated Rs 500,000, Bharat Basnet of Kathmandu (Rs 1.72 million) and others, said Chhetri Samaj Central General Secretary Kumar Khadka.

The priest reciting the Mahayagya was Pandit Bhagawat Bhaskar Kamalnayan Gautam. The Samaj has started the Mahaygya with an aim to set up multipurpose welfare buildings, museums, library, revolving funds for providing scholarships for students and treatment, and memorial chambers for social services.

The Mahayagya aims to collect Rs 100 million. A plan of Rs one billon has also been made to undertake various long term projects, the Samaj said.

According to the sources, two buildings -- museum and library -- will be built in Pokhara and one in Lekhnath. It will also create revolving funds to provide sponsorships for 5,000 children living under abject poverty, besides treating kidney and cancer patients.
