KATHMANDU, June 18: An additional 80 million liters of water is now being brought daily to Kathmandu from the Ribarma River in Melamchi for regular distribution. The initiative aims to ensure a consistent water supply from the Melamchi project even during the monsoon season.

On Monday, a team including Minister for Drinking Water Pradeep Yadav visited the Ribarma site in Melamchi and conducted a successful test of a newly constructed water tank built to channel water to Kathmandu.

Following the successful trial, the Melamchi Water Supply Development Committee (MWSDC) began regular distribution on Tuesday. Water was sent through the Melamchi tunnel from the Ribarma River on Monday night, confirmed MWSDC Executive Director and Engineer Ratna Prasad Lamichhane.

He said, “The tank built at Ribarma to send water to Kathmandu was successfully tested on Monday. That same night, water was sent, and now an additional 80 million liters is being distributed in the valley.”

Lamichhane clarified that this arrangement is temporary until the main headbox of the Melamchi project is operational. For now, water from Ribarma is being mixed and brought to Kathmandu for distribution.

“Last year, we studied how dirty the water here gets during the monsoon,” he said, “That study showed no major issues, so we sent the water on Monday, and it reached Kathmandu today.”

Currently, Melamchi supplies 200 million liters of water daily. With the additional supply of 5–7 million liters each from the Ribarma and Bagmati rivers during the monsoon, the MWSDC plans to bring at least 10 to 14 million extra liters daily to Kathmandu this year.

Water brought from Ribarma is being distributed through several water tanks built in Kathmandu. The supply is expected to ease the daily lives of Valley residents, and efforts are underway to make it a regular system.
