KATHMANDU, May 7: The mayoral candidates of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) from different political parties will participate in a joint debate program hosted by a group of youths on Monday.

The program will be held at Kumari Cinema Hall in Kathmandu from 10:30 am and will last for two hours. The organizers have claimed that the debate is aimed at understanding the mayoral candidates for Kathmandu better.

The organizers said the debate will be held in the presence of around 300 voters at the hall and the entire program will be broadcast live through different social media and television channels.

Sumana Shrestha, a member of the organizing committee, said that the debate is being held so that the voters could get to know the mayoral candidates, listen to their visions and plans and understand them better.

“Several people have registered their candidacies for the post of mayor of the capital city but very few people know them and their capacity,” said Shrestha. “So, the program will focus on having a healthy debate among the candidates where they would present their plans and visions for Kathmanduites.”

According to the organizers, voters can ask the candidates questions via the social media as well. “The voters can ask their questions using #Vote4KTM or #KtmMayorDebate through Facebook and Twitter to the candidates,” reads a statement released by the organizers. Around 28 candidates from different political parties, including independent candidates, are in the race for the coveted post of KMC Mayor to be elected through the local polls slated for May 14.
