SURKHET, Jan 17: After rescuing a total of 150 homeless persons in the last one year, Karnali Province government has started preparations to make the province free of street people.
According to the province’s Ministry of Social Development, the provincial government is preparing to announce the region free of street people in co-ordination with the local units and Manav Sewa Ashram.
The government is making the announcement amidst an event on coming Saturday, according to the ministry. Karnali Province will be the first province to be free of street people.

“We have rescued people staying at temples and public places in the past one year. The province is already free of street people, said Man Bahadur BK, secretary at the ministry, adding that only an official announcement remains to be made.
Of the total 10 districts in the province, Surkhet, the headquarters of Karnali, had the highest number of street people, BK informed Republica.
A provincial cabinet meeting held on December 24, 2019, had decided to declare Karnali Province as free of street people. Likewise, on December 27, all the 79 local units and 10 District Coordination Committees showed their commitment to declaring the region free of street people.
The government has formed committees in all the 10 districts of the province to inspect if there are street people in the region. All the committees are chaired by the Chief of respective District Coordination Committee of the district. Likewise, the government is also preparing to form committees in every local unit of the province.
Secretary BK also said that the government will also bring ‘Manav Sewa Ashram Working Procedure, 2020’, after the province is declared free of street people.
Of the total 150 rescued people, 50 are kept at the Manav Sewa Ashram in Surkhet. Likewise, the remaining have been already handed over to their respective families, according to Srijana Oli, co-coordinator of the Ashram.
