According to inspector Thapa, the Upreti couple had already initiated a legal process for divorce and were consultating a lawyer at Shreemar Law Firm at Putalisadak. Quoting eyewitnesses, Thapa said that he took out the pistol just to frighten his wife but didn´t fire. The police later seized the pistol and two rounds of bullets from Upreti´s possession.
Upreti has confessed to the police that the weapon was in his possession since the post-conflict situation and he had bought the weapon for Rs 20,000. According to police spokesperson DSP Chakra Bahadur Singh, they have kept Upreti at Hanuman Dhoka for further investigation.
His wife Shova, an engineer by profession, told the police that he was not misusing the weapon and had kept it at home since the last few years. Upreti, originally from Bara district, has been living near Ghattekulo since the past few years.
