Jewelry artisan training center opens

KATHMANDU, April 4: The Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Thursday started a training center aiming to enhance the capacity of Nepali jewelry makers.



With the commencement of the center, Nepali jewelry makers no longer have to go to foreign countries including India or Thailand for the training.[break]



The center has been opened in Chhetrapaty, Kathmandu with the support of German agency for international cooperation GIZ.



Lal Mani Joshi, the secretary at the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies, inaugurated the center that will offer training on designing and making jewelries, testing quality of gold, carving, stone-setting and refinery of jewelries, among others.



Manik Ratna Shakya, coordinator of the center, said the process to get affiliation from the Center for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) was underway.



The center built with Rs 4.5 million and was supported by GIZ. It will offer eight types of training, three hours a day from both local and foreign instructors.



Training fees range from Rs 5,000 to Rs 18,000 per person depending on the type of training. The center is offering training for one to three months.
