JC reshuffles High Court judges

KATHMANDU, Feb 14: The Judicial Council (JC) headed by Chief Justice Cholendra SJB Rana on Wednesday reshuffled judges of high courts (HC) and assigned additional tasks to some of them.

The JC has transferred judges Prem Raj Karki from High Court Tulsipur to High Court Biratnagar; Raj Kumar Ban from Patan to Dipayal; Bir Bahadur Dangi from Pokhara to Biratnagar; Hem Raj Panta from Patan to Tulsipur.

Similarly, judges Balkrishna Uprety has been transferred from High Court Birgunj to High Court Janakpur; Prabha Basnet from National Judicial Academy (NJA) to High Court Patan; and Tek Prasad Dhungana from High Court Hetauda to High Court Patan.

The JC also recommended the government to assign judge Prem Raj Karki as the head of the Revenue Tribunal Biratnagar and Judge Hem Raj Pant as the head of the Revenue Tribunal Nepalgunj.

The JC also decided to recommend the government to assign Biratnagar High Court Judge Shekhar Prasad Paudel to look into the alleged irregularities at Biratnagar Jute Mills.

The JC has also summoned two more judges from High Court Biratnagar, Sadhuram Sapkota and Janak Pandey to the JC for questioning in connection with their handling of the court case on the high-profile 33 kg gold smuggling scam.

The JC has been investigating into the granting of bail to some of the accused in the scam by High Court Biratnagar and four judges including Kul Ratna Bhurtel are already being investigated. The four who were earlier summoned to Kathmandu include judges Saranga Subedi, Thir Bahadur Karki, Umesh Kumar Singh and Umesh Raj Paudel.

The High Court of Biratnagar had released police officials and others accused in the scam on bail.
