KATHMANDU, Nov 7: The Tokyo High Court on Wednesday acquitted Govinda Mainali, who spent 15 years in prison in Japan earlier being convicted of killing a Japanese woman in 1997.

According to the Kyodo news agency, the 46-year-old Mainali was cleared in the case on the basis of DNA evidences. Mainali is currently in Nepal. The Tokyo police said they will re-start investigation into the murder. [break]

Earlier in July, the court had quashed an appeal against the retrial of the Govinda Prasad Mainali case, paving the way for Mainali to get clean chit in the high-profile Tokyo murder case.

On June 7, the Tokyo High Court Public Prosecutors Office had lodged an objection shortly after the high court´s decision to grant a retrial of the case.

The court had granted retrial of the case on the basis of a new DNA testing, which suggested that Mainali could be innocent. Following the verdict, Mainali was released.
