The rains have arrived but the drought has made its effect on the agriculture of the region. Wheat crop has been severely affected by the drought, while farmers couldn´t plant mung (a lentil type), one of their main cash crops here.
Mung, which used to cost Rs 30 a kilo in previous years costs Rs 50 this year.
“Last year my farm produced a quintal of mung but this year I planted in just 5 kattha of my farm but even that didn´t sprout,” says Rambilas Sah, a farmer from Raghunathpur.
Farmers say that along with mung, the production of mango, litchi, pineapple, watermelon, potatoes, wheat and yellow lentils have been affected. Farmers also say that the quality of this year´s crop has decreased and many grain species are prone to diseases.
According to agriculture expert Umesh Sah, the rains have created a preferable environment for paddy plantation. He further said that the rainfall this Saturday will be helpful for all plants and animals.
