KATHMANDU, Aug 30: Nepal Calendar Determination Committee has clarified that Raksha Bandhan, Janai Purnima and Gai Jatra festivals are scheduled for Thursday, August 31 in the calendar approved by Nepal the (Panchanga) hindu calendar. This year, due to the change in tithi, the two-day festival is scheduled for one day, the committee said.

According to the tradition of Dharmashastra, the date of Udayavyapini (when the sun has risen) should be taken as the basis and the committee said that it should be celebrated on Thursday itself. It is mentioned in the Hindu calendar that on Wednesday at 11:28AM i.e. after 10:17AM Chaturdashi (14th day of waxing phase of moon) ends and Purnima (full moon) Tithi begins. It is said that the full moon is only at 5:18PM on Thursday. For this reason, some communities in Kathmandu Valley have prepared for Raksha Bandhan on Wednesday. According to the committee, this festival is celebrated on the same day even though Uday Purnima is only 1 hour.

He made it clear by issuing a statement saying that there was confusion among the public due to the change in tithi. Some local Newar communities have decided to celebrate Janai Purnima today to celebrate Gai Jatra or Sa Paru festival tomorrow. Bhaktapur municipality has published a notice instructing locals to celebrate Raksha Bandhan today and Sa Paru festival on Thursday.
