DURADANDA, Lamjung, Oct 29: With the commencement of computer vocational training for the first time in Lamjung district, students interested in Information Technology (IT) related courses have been making a beeline to enroll in the course.

Suryadaya Higher Secondary School of Duradanda VDC received the permission to conduct IT courses from The Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT). The school started teaching vocational courses focusing on computer from August 17.[break]

In just two months time, the vocational course has attracted 40 students, including some from the same school and some from nearby villages, while the school continues to receive enquiries from more interested students, informed Rishiram Khaniya, the principal of the school.

"We are extremely happy as we were worried that there wouldn´t be enough students for the course in the first place," said Khaniya.

All students who have passed School Leaving Certificate (SLC) are eligible for the computer course, informed Khaniya.

Ansuya Adhikari, one of the students enrolled in the course, said, "I was always interested to learn more about computer technology. This course will certainly help me gain professional knowledge required in this field of study."

This computer training course is part of CTEVT´s campaign to spread computer literacy in all the districts of Nepal. According to CTEVT, such computer courses are already in operation at various government schools in 36 districts.

In the 12 months duration of the training, students have to take 10 computer courses like database, hardware and Web designing and work as an intern for 3 months at any institution.

Two computer engineers and two teachers appointed by CTEVT oversee the operation of the compute course in the school.

However, Khaniya said that the school is still waiting for the 21 computers CTEVT had promised for the course. The classes are being run using the 10 computers of the school.

"Their estimate was to provide one computer per two students. We hope they will provide us the computers soon. Also, we need internet service in the school," said Khaniya.
