'IT conference will be a milestone in ensuring accessibility and affordability'

KATHMANDU, Jan 26: An IT conference on ‘The Internet is for everyone’ will be held on January 29 -30 at Hotel De l’Annapurna in the capital. Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) and Internet Society Nepal Chapter (ISOC Nepal) is organizing the 12th edition of CAN ICT Conference.

Babu Ram Aryal, President of ISOC Nepal and member of the conference committee, said the objective of the event is to discuss the overall dynamics of Internet to make it accessible to all citizens irrespective of class, gender, ability and socio-economic background.



Five different topics have been chosen for the conference, which is targeting participation of more than 100 policy makers, government agencies, Internet service providers, telecom operators, academicians, lawyers, ICT students and others.



The tracks include infrastructure, e-enabled services and application, Internet security, Internet content, Internet law and policy.







“We will hold discussion and presentations on what kind of content is necessary for Internet in Nepal, what are the major Internet security issues, localization of Internet content and so on,” Aryal told Republica.



The registration fee for two-day conference is Rs 4,000 inclusive of lunch and refreshments. The fee for students and CAN/ ISOC members is Rs 3,000 per person.



Keynote speaker of the event is Dr. Subhajit Basu, director of LLM Program at University of Leeds, U.K. The conference features four foreign speakers and seven local speakers.



Officials representing Ericcson India, Novatium Solution, Internet and Mobile Association of India are the other speakers of the conference.



Similarly, local speakers include Dr. Ram Krishna Timalsena, Former Registrar at the Supreme Court of Nepal, Radhes Pant, chief executive at Investment Board, Manohar Kumar Bhattarai, former vice-president of High Level Commission for Information and Technology (HLCIT), and others.



“We hope the conference will work as a milestone in ensuring Internet accessibility at the grassroots level and also making it affordable to all segments,” Aryal said.
