“We have already dispatched invitation letters to all countries through diplomatic channel. Seven of them have already confirmed their participation in the conference,” said Joint Secretary Meena Khanal, spokesperson at the Ministry of Environment.

The conference being organized as part of the Mountain Initiative, is expected to offer an opportunity to the mountain countries and stakeholders to come together on a common platform to deliberate on issues of mountain countries.

“The conference will provide a forum for mountain countries to share knowledge and experience on the impact of climate change on the mountains and deliberate on the associated common risks,” said Khanal.

Altogether 53 countries that have mountains higher than 4,000 meters have been invited to the conference. These include 11 Least Developed Countries, 33 developing countries and 11 developed countries.

Nepal decided to launch Mountain Initiatives after realizing that the issues of Mountain countries were not given due priority in international climate change negotiations despite the fact that these countries are at the receiving end of such effects.

Nepal had raised the issue of climate change impact during the COP-15 held in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2009.
