KATHMANDU, March 11 :A Dillibazar inmate convicted of smuggling brown sugar has managed to escape along with his handcuff under mysterious circumstances on Tuesday from Nepal Eye Hospital, Tripureswar, where he was taken for treatment.

Pasang Sherpa, 30, of Fulping Katti in Singhupalchowk district, had been serving prison term in Dillibazar Jail since 8th Oct 2012, after Kathmandu District Court sentenced him to 15 years in jail along with a fine of Rs 500,000. He was arrested from Kamal Pokhari for possessing brown sugar.

The inmate had a sore eye and was taken to Eye Hospital for treatment. He was accompanied by three policemen, according to jailor Khadga Raj Sharma.

Preliminary investigation shows that the inmate wearing black pants and a white t-shirt escaped while the police were looking for a taxi to take him back to prison after checkup, he said, adding that the convict managed to escape due to negligence of the personnel who were deployed for his security. Sherpa was taken to hospital at 10 am and treatment took not more than 45 minutes, according to the police.
