Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis resigned mere hours after 61.3 percent of the country's voters backed his calls to reject creditor's demands for more austerity. Supporters of the 'No' vote partied late into the evening in Athens, despite warnings that a failure to reach a deal with creditors could result in Greece exiting the eurozone.

Scenes of jubilation were certainly rare in a country with the lowest life satisfaction rating out of all OECD nations. Indeed, since 2007, life satisfaction in Greece has plunged 27.3 percentage points, according to the ONS. Other countries impacted by the financial crisis such as Ireland and Spain have also experienced a decline in life satisfaction, though nowhere near as severe as that experienced in Greece. Chile saw a huge improvement in life satisfaction between 2007 and 2014. This is primarily due to falling unemployment and increased public social expenditure.7unhapy2.jpg
