Metropolitan Police Range Gaushala raided the house after a tip-off that questions for the MBBS entrance examinations under the Tribhuvan University were being leaked ahead of the examinations. [break]
Police recovered two US-made pistols and nine bullets, Rs 50,000 in cash and a vehicle bearing Indian registration plate from the house.
Five of the arrested are Indian nationals, while the rest are Nepalis. District Education Officer of Parsa Kedar Tiwari and his wife are among those arrested, a police source said. Tiwari claimed he was called there by Dr Prabhat Kushwaha, the source added.
Students appearing in the MBBS entrance examinations told the police they were brought to the house by Prajwal KC.
According to the source, the raided house was rented by Navin Sharma, director of National Academy for Medical Education (NAME) that has been conducting coaching classes for students due to sit for MBBS entrance examinations. Police said Sharma had kept the examinees assuring them of pass marks.
Police, meanwhile, have released DEO Tiwari and other Nepalis on condition of reporting back periodically. Chief of Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu Ramesh Kharel said they were released as they were not found involved in the incident.
Kharel added that they have taken the five Indian students in custody and started an investigation as it was revealed that they had brought the weapons found in the house. Police have also seized the CPU of a computer in the house for investigation.
