Director General of Department of Water Induced Disaster Prevention, Mahendra Bahadur Gurung, and Deputy Director General of Department of Irrigation, Anil Kumar Pokharel, led the Nepali team during the inspection.
The high-level joint inspection team expressed satisfaction over the timely completion of the Koshi breach closure works, said a press statement issued by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.
"It was a challenging task to divert the flow of water away from the breach and to undertake restoration of the afflux bund along with recommended protection works within a limited time window available before the onset of next floods," the statement said.
"This was accomplished within this time window through the joint efforts of the governments of India and Nepal despite several hindrances which got in the way in terms of the disruptions and stoppages of work caused by frequent bandas (strikes) and agitations, which continuously threatened to delay the completion of works," the embassy said.
The Koshi breach closure works were undertaken in accordance with the recommendations made by the Koshi Breach Closure Advisory Team under the leadership of N. Sanyal, one of the leading Indian experts on the Koshi River basin.
Koshi River breached its embankment at West Kusaha in Sunsari district on August 18 last year and subsequently flooded several villages in Nepal and Indian bordering areas.
Thousands of people were displaced on either side of the border due to the Koshi disaster last year.
