KATHMANDU, Oct 27: Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer is in intensive care in Sydney after suffering a severe internal injury during the third ODI against Australia. The Team India Vice-Captain sustained internal bleeding and a spleen laceration following a hard fall while fielding on October 25.
According to medical reports, Iyer suffered a deep impact injury to his left lower rib cage, which led to a tear in his spleen. Though doctors have described his condition as stable, he will remain in the ICU for at least 48 hours for close monitoring.
Cricket fans across India and neighbouring Nepal have expressed concern and sent prayers for the dynamic middle-order batter, known for his composure and stroke play.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been coordinating with medical specialists in Sydney and keeping in touch with experts back home. A team doctor is staying by Iyer’s side to track his recovery.
Meanwhile, the BCCI has arranged for Iyer’s family to travel to Sydney. While his sister was initially expected to fly out, one or both of his parents may now accompany her to be with him during this critical phase.
A source quoted by The Times of India said, “Arrangements are being made by the BCCI. It’s not yet confirmed who will go, but at least one family member will reach Sydney very soon.”
The next 48 hours will be crucial in determining Iyer’s recovery path and whether he will require a longer hospital stay.
In an official statement, the BCCI confirmed that Iyer “sustained an impact injury to his left lower ribcage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025” and is under “expert medical supervision.”
Before his injury, Iyer had scored 72 runs across two innings in the series, which India lost 1–2 to Australia. He is not part of India’s upcoming T20I squad for the five-match series starting October 29 in Canberra.
Fans and teammates alike have flooded social media with messages wishing Iyer a speedy recovery, hoping to see him back in India’s middle order soon.
