India terms three-tier polls a milestone

KATHMANDU, Feb 3: Two months after the election of parliamentary and provincial assembly elections, the government of India has congratulated the government and people of Nepal for the successful conduct of the three tiers of elections  and termed the achievement an important milestone in the democratic transition of Nepal.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India in its statement on the conclusion of  External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's two-day Nepal visit on Friday, said that her government was looking forward to working with the democratically-elected government in Nepal to take bilateral ties  forward to new heights for mutual benefit. 

The MEA said India wanted to support the government of Nepal as per its priorities in its endeavors for rapid economic growth and development.

During her two-day visit, Swaraj called on President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and UCPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

She also held meetings with President of Federal Socialist Forum Nepal Upendra Yadav, Coordinator of the Presidium of the Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN) Mahanta Thakur and other RJPN leaders and congratulated them on their recent electoral victories.

Nepal held three tiers of elections - parliamentary, provincial and local - last year to transform the country into a federal system in accordance with the new constitution promulgated in September 2015.
