The students were forced to stay at home for the better part of the last academic session and don´t want to take any chance with their future. India seems to be the first priority for these students while Kathmandu comes a distant second.
Aditya Hridaya from Lahan, one of the 454 who got distinction from the two districts, goes one step ahead and says that there is no future of education in the whole of Nepal, not just the Tarai. “The lack of security in the capital has closed even that option,” Hridaya says. He wants to go to Philippines to become a pilot despite having a desire to study in Nepal.
Hridaya is not alone in looking to abandon the Tarai region for further studies. Deepika Chaudhary, who also got distinction, plans to go to Kathmandu to study science to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor as most of the parents in the Tarai are averse to sending daughters out of the country.
Most of the students excelling in SLC want to choose science stream to become doctors and serve the citizens. Bhawana Yadav, who got first division, is no different and wants to study nursing. Having lost her father while still a child, she had to give up her dreams of going far for further studies and plans to study either in Rajbiraj or Biratnagar.
The trend of parents in east Tarai pushing their children into science stream if they get first division is seeing a huge rise in the number of students in science colleges but the students are still going elsewhere in search of quality education.
