In course of avenging the defeat suffered in the last edition of the biennial tournament, skipper Sunil Chhetri netted the decisive goal in the 11the minute of additional half an hour. The match went into additional time following 1-1 draw in the regulation time. Earlier, it was Afghanistan to break the deadlock in the second half during an evenly contested affair. Z Amiri put Afghanistan ahead in the 70th minute to silence the noisy home supporters.
The Afghans' joy however was short lived as striker Jeje Lalpekhula restored parity two minutes later. South Asian giant India was defeated 2-0 in the final of the last edition played at the Dasharath Stadium, Kathmandu. The tournament will be the last edition of SAFF Championship since it has joined Central Asian Football Association.
