India´s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday made a formal announcement about the new appointment. Rae, 56, is an Indian Foreign Service (IAS) officer of 1980 batch, and is currently serving as India´s ambassador to Vietnam. [break]
“He is expected to take up his assignment shortly,” the Indian foreign ministry said in a statement.
India had nominated Rae as the new ambassador to Nepal on April 17. Sources said his agrement was approved some two weeks by the Government of Nepal.
Rae will replace current Indian ambassador to Nepal Jayanta Prasad, whose tenure in Kathmandu will end in August.
Rae was a joint secretary for Nepal/Bhutan Division at the Indian foreign ministry from October 2012 to Jan 2006. He was press secretary to the Indian president from December 1995 to December 1997.
Rae was also the first secretary at the Permanent Mission of India, New York. Previously, he served in different capacities at various Indian missions in countries, including Uganda and Hungary.
