KATHMANDU, June 8: Nepal on Monday marked the 77th day of the nationwide lockdown order enforced on March 24 in a bid to curb the spread of novel coronavirus.

As per the order, all economic activities have come to a grinding halt for more than a couple of months. Except for emergencies, no vehicle and public movement is allowed.

Despite the rumors of relaxing the lockdown, the government is not able to come up with a concrete modality of another form of the ongoing lockdown.

The people, however, are coming out of their houses and gradually resuming their activities.

When Republica Online correspondents visited various places in the capital on Monday, a sharp increase in vehicular movement was witnessed. Mostly private vehicles were seen plying the streets. Public vehicles, however, have not resumed their operation yet after not getting a green signal from the government.

Most shops and industries were found open. Outlets in New Road, Bhote Bahal and Indrachowk open in the morning. The shopkeepers were found critical of the government saying that the government has failed to facilitate them by relaxing the ongoing lockdown.

Amid heightened pressure on the government to ease the lockdown, Nepal, however, has witnessed a sharp increase in infections of COVID-19.  More than 3,400 cases have been reported including fourteen cases of fatalities.
