KATHMANDU, April 11: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed its concern over the recent government move to suspend Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari from his position.


According to an official of NRB, the IMF has started an inquiry to find out the reason behind suspending the NRB governor abruptly. The international financial institution has expressed its concern in relation to the possible financial risk due to the suspension of the head of the apex monetary institution of Nepal at a time when the country is facing economic problems, the depleting foreign currency reserves.

The NRB source said that the IMF could discontinue its funding to the landlocked country provided the authorities concerned could not produce any valid reason behind taking action against NRB Governor Adhikari. A few months ago, the IMF had agreed to provide Nepal with an interest free loan of US $ 395.90 million.
