ILAM, July 9: A husband and his wife succumbed to the coronavirus disease on the same day in Mangsebung Rural Municipality-5 in Ilam. The deceased have been identified as 79-year-old Tek Bahadur Lawati and his 73-year-old wife Lakshi Hangma Lawati. 

As many as seven members of the Lawati family were infected by the contagious disease, out of which two elders of the same house lost their lives. Their son Suman Lawati and other members of the family including their daughter-in-law and two grandchildren are currently staying isolated at their home. 

According to Ram Yonghang, a local, the health condition of the remaining members of the Lawati family is normal at the moment.

As many as 22 cases of COVID-19 were found in Illam on Thursday. The total number of infected in the district has reached 2,144 with 721 recoveries recorded so far. According to the District Administration Office, 52 people in the district have died of COVID-19. Also, 371 people in the district are undergoing treatment for the deadly disease. 

Among the 10 local governments in the district, Ilam Municipality has recorded the highest number of infections with 675 cases of COVID-19 recorded so far. Phakphokthum Rural Municipality has recorded the lowest number of infections with 55 cases of COVID-19 so far. The increase in the number of infections in Ilam has spread panic among the locals. The increase in COVID-19 cases in the district is followed by the government's decision to lift the ban on public vehicles and public movement.
