The colleges had applied for affiliation three years ago, according to the HSEB Vice Chairperson Chaitanya Prasad Sharma. "The institutions have been granted affiliation only after they upgraded their infrastructure and facilities on par with the criteria set by HSEB," Sharma told Republica.
The board had stopped granting new affiliations since last year after failing to effectively monitor and regulate existing 3,058 higher secondary schools and plus two colleges. The board had been dragged into controversy after the Commission for the Investigation of the Abuse of Authority charged some officials with irregularities while granting affiliation to new plus two colleges.
Fresh appointments at the top positions of the board has, however, helped expedite actions against the colleges that have not fulfilled the HSEB set criteria, claimed Sharma.
On Monday, the HSEB has issued a notice to 72 such higher secondary schools and plus two colleges that have not upgraded their infrastructures and facilities on par with the set criteria. These institutions have been asked to upgrade their infrastructures and facilities within 15 days.
Twenty nine of these colleges are from the Valley, including 17 in Kathmandu, 10 in Lalitpur and two in Bhaktapur.
