How often do you watch Nepali channels?

KATHMANDU, May 9: Television has always been there and is probably the best way to pass time. Indian soaps and western sitcoms are famous amongst many of us but where does our Nepali TV channels stand in the crowd?

At a time when the Nepali movie industry is slowly, but finally, grasping the urban denizens, it’s about time our TV channels pull up their socks and catch the audiences’ fancy. [break]

Maayurikaa Miharu says, “I don’t watch Nepali channels that often because they lack programs for teenagers.” Even as a kid, Miharu did not find any programs particularly focused on kids and he says that the situation is still the same. “I tried watching Kantipur TV for a bit but never watched it religiously,” he says.

Tirtha Raj too felt the same. He shares, “A while ago, I got irritated when watching Nepali channels but these days I, sometimes, watch it to update myself with fresh news and to catch up with what’s happening around.”

For most of us, Nepali channels are basically for news and not much for entertainment as a larger chuck of the Nepali audience, especially that younger generation prefer either Indian or English channels.

Despite channels like Image, Kantipur and recently Avenues, among others, having started air entertainment focused shows; they haven’t been able to attract viewers.

The call-in shows do have a fan following but with almost every channel airing prototype shows the attraction is rapidly dying out.

“I sometimes watch Nepali channels but it doesn’t level my expectations. I like watching reality shows, music, songs and latest gossips about celebrities and Nepali channels don’t really provide that,” says Moin Uddin.

According to him, the quality, content and VJ’s are not up to the mark and the production team is not creative.

Also, one of the main reasons for Moin, and most of us, to flip the channel are the not-so-creative advertisements.

“They are either dubbed or dumb, and that’s what compels me to change the channel,” says Moin, who’d rather watch Channel V, Zoom or MTV.

However, for Roman Bhattarai serial like ‘Meri Bassai’ and ‘Tito Satya’ are fun to watch but he too looks forward to news mostly in Nepali channels.
