Host upsets visiting Transport United

POKHARA, Nov 11: The host Pokhara XI upset Transport United, the visiting team from Bhutan, in the Safal Pokhara Cup Football Tournament on Friday and booked the quarterfinal berth in the tournament.



Pokhara XI defeated Transport United 4-1 in tiebreaker at the Pokhara Stadium as the regulation time and added time both ended at 1-1.[break]



Buddha Lama, Uttam Gurung, Bibek Gurung and Roshan Hirachan scored from the spot for the host in the tiebreaker while only Nawang Dendup scored for the Transport United. Pokhara XI goalkeeper Samit Rajbhandary stopped Nima Sangay while Jacov Walee shot above the bar.



Rajbhandary was awarded man-of-the-match for his heroics in the match.



Transport United, the four-time league champion of Bhutan, was crowded with Bhutanese national players. Afeez scored in the 13th minute of the match for Transport United and put pressure on the local boys.



Supper-sub Arjun Subba came off the bench in the 11th minute of the second half replacing Govinda Thapa and leveled the match in the 14th minute of the second half.



Transport United´s Thinley Dorji had missed an early opportunity to score in the 10th minute of the match as his 30-yard powerful shot just went wide while Chhimi´s shot on the pass of Afeez hit the woodwork in the 12th minute of the second half.



Meanwhile, a 35-yard shot off Pokhara´s Uttam Gurung hit the crossbar in the 70th minute of the match while Transport United´s glovesman Karma Thinley stopped Gurung in the 74th minute.



Nidup Dorjee, the coach of the Bhutanese side, blamed inadequate trainings for the loss while winning coach Krishna Thapa said that his players came out of the pressure of a goal down after the equalizer and dominated the Bhutanese side.



Tribhuwan Army Club will take on Mega Three Star Club on Saturday in a quarterfinal match. Army had defeated Jawalakhel 2-1 in the opening match of the tournament while Three Star received bye in the first round.
