Commercial flights to New Delhi, Doha from 2nd week of April
Himalaya Airlines to operate Pokhara-Lhasa flights
KATHMANDU, March 9: Himalaya Airlines’ first Airbus 320-214 landed at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) on Wednesday. The newly delivered airliner -- with the registration number 9N-ALM -- received a water cannon salute after landing.
Himalaya Airlines is a Nepal-China joint venture airline company.
Nepali companies -- HIF Aviation Investment Company Pvt Ltd and Yeti World Investment Pvt Ltd -- jointly hold a 51 percent stake in Himalaya Airlines and 49 percent of the shares are owned by Tibet Airlines.According to officials of Himalaya Airlines, the aircraft was delivered at TIA from Chengdu in China.
As per a statement issued by the airline, the aircraft was welcomed at TIA in the presence of Himalaya Airlines President Cheng Hui, its Vice President (Administration) Vijay Shrestha and captain Jatinder Pal Singh Dhillon, the vice-president of operations.
The A320 aircraft has 158 seats in two class configurations, eight for business and 150 for economy, the airline says.
Meanwhile, Himalaya Airlines says that it will begin international flights from April 2016, flying directly to New Delhi in India and Doha in Qatar on a daily basis.
“We will begin commercial flights to New Delhi, India and Doha, Qatar from the second week of April,” an official of Himalaya Airlines told Republica.
The official also said that Himalaya Airlines plans to bring its second Airbus A319 in three months time. “Once the second aircraft arrives, we will begin flights to Lhasa, Beijing and Chengdu of China,” the Himalaya Airlines official added.
On the occasion, Shrestha, the Vice President, Administration, of Himalaya Airlines, said the company was pleased to welcome its first aircraft and the arrival of the aircraft would help strengthen Nepal’s air connectivity to the international network. “This marks the opening of a new chapter in commercial aviation in Nepal and I am confident that Himalaya Airlines will also contribute to attaining the country’s objective of promoting the tourism sector,” he said.
