TIKAPUR, August 27: The ward office of Tikapur Municipality-7 has issued a notice and appealed to local residents to remain alert as the embankment in Shahipur has collapsed. The ward office has warned the people stating that floods could come anytime.

The public notice issued by Ward Chairperson Ram Lal Dagaura Tharu states that there is a possibility of flood in the village at any time and the residents of the wards 5, 6, 7 and 8 of eastern region are at high risk.

The Karnali River has washed away the embankment in the area and intensified land erosion. Chairperson Tharu informed Republica that even the new embankment constructed by the Rani Jamara Kulariya Irrigation Project has been destroyed.

Senior Division Engineer Bidur Shrestha said that all the stones placed at the site have been washed away by the river. “We had placed some large stones along the river so that it would not reach the nearby village. However, those stones have been washed away,” he said.

“There is another embankment behind the one washed away,” he added, “but the risk has increased.”

As the river continues to erode rapidly, various efforts are being made to prevent the further damages. “We are trying to stop the river from overflowing with sandbags and weeds,” said local resident Chandra Bahadur Rokamagar. Children and the elderly people are already being moved to safer places. “The risk of the river entering the village has left the people in fear. Thus, the children and the elderly have been sent to the flood victim camp at Tikapur Municipality-1,” Rokamagar added.
