High-ranking golfing officials in town

KATHMANDU, July 28: Asian-Pacific Golf Association President Kwang Su Hur and along with Vice President David Cherry and APGA Royal and Ancient (APGA R&A) Director Dominique Wall arrived in the capital on Tuesday to participate in the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Nepal Golf Association´s (NGA). Upon arrival at the Royal Nepal Golf Course (RNGC) near Kathmandu airport, APGA Vice President Cherry said golf has tremendous future in Nepal. “We are here to promote golf. I have heard a lot about the progress Nepal has made at junior level and we would like to support the game.” He further added, “I would like to see Nepali golfer playing in the Asian Circuit in the near future.”



Nepal applied for APGA membership in 2003 but became full member only last year. APGA R&A Director Wall said this trip can be fruitful for Nepali golf. He said, “This is an important trip from our point of view. We would look forward to the ways to support golf in Nepal.” R&A previously sent 45 junior golf kits and £5,000 for junior golf support to Nepal. NGA is establishing golf academy in the country. In this regard NGA is expecting APGA´s support -- both financial and technical.



In the welcome speech at RNGC, RNGC captain Rabindra Man Shrestha expressed delight at the arrival of such high profile guests. He said, “This is an honor to welcome you in our country. RNGC is the oldest golf course in Nepal. Though its 9-hole course and not very big but it has produced lots of fine professional golfers of the country. We call it mother golf course of Nepal. Our number one professional golfer Shiva Ram Shrestha is also a product of RNGA.” He added, “Your visit can be a positive boost for Nepali golfing sector.”



This is the first time in Nepal´s golfing history that such high ranking dignitaries paid a visit. APGA officials will visit Pokhara on Wednesday and visit two golf courses there. They will visit Yeti Golf Course inside Fulbari Resort and Spa and Himalayan Golf Course in the city and play golf there. They will return to Kathmandu on Thursday and play at Gokarna Golf Course at Gokarna Forest Resort and Spa and Army Golf Course at Kathmandu airport. APGA officials will then participate in the silver jubilee celebrations function of NGA on July 30.
