KATHMANDU, July 23: The Ministry of Health and Population has issued a directive to the National Academy of Medical Sciences to depute long-term health workers and employees from the National Institute of Medical Sciences to designated posting areas. The instruction was issued on Sunday, and Health Minister Mohan Bahadur Basnet reiterated the implementation of the directive on Monday due to non-compliance from some employees.

Among the 73 employees working at Bir Hospital on contract for an extended period, most have been reassigned to local and provincial levels as part of the ministry's effort to streamline staffing. Despite a previous instruction two weeks ago to return to their designated work areas by July, some employees failed to comply, offering various excuses.

Co-spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, Dr Sameer Kumar Adhikari, emphasized that the concerned employees must adhere to the ministry's decision and relocate themselves to the designated areas. He clarified that employees who have already been adjusted at the local or provincial level should report to their assigned locations.

Sagar Mishra, under secretary at Bir Hospital, reported that following the recent instruction, some employees have relocated themselves to the designated areas while others, who are yet to comply haven’t been allowed to mark their attendance at the hospital. The hospital authorities are taking necessary steps to ensure all employees are working in their respective areas.

The issue of some employees preferring to stay at Bir Hospital on a long-term contract rather than working in remote areas has been raised. Some employees allegedly exploit attendance-based salary systems at Bir Hospital while also working additional hours in private health institutions.
