KATHMANDU, Nov 1: The Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN) has announced 30% discounts on room tariff at its member hotels, resorts and guesthouses to foreigners visiting Nepal next year.

Similarly, the association has also said its member hotels will provide 15% discounts on food.

The discount on both room charges and food is targeted at tourists that visit Nepal during the Visit Nepal Year 2020 – a yearlong tourism promotional campaign.

A meeting of the executive committee of HAN held last week took the decision.

“Our member hotels across the country will provide discounts from January to December next year when the country will be celebrating Visit Nepal Year 2020,” Binayak Shah, first vice president of HAN, told Republica. He said the scheme announced by the association should help increase foreign tourist footfalls in the country.

Over 1,600 hotels, resorts and guesthouses are affiliated to HAN. Most of the star hotels in the country are under the umbrella of HAN. The decision means foreigners coming to Nepal in 2020 will have to pay 30% lower for rooms and 15% for food in these member hotels.

The government has set a target of bringing in 2 million foreign visitors to the country in 2020.

The discount package for foreign visitors comes in the wake of calls from the government to make contributions from various stakeholders to make Visit Nepal Year 2020 campaign a success.

“As the country is organizing a mega tourism promotional campaign, it is also our responsibility to make contribution from our side. By offering discounts, we have put the interest of the country and the tourism industry ahead of our profits,” added Shah.

According to HAN officials, the decision to offer discounts to foreign visitors will give a shot in the arm to Visit Nepal Year 2020 preparations. The government has been identifying and promoting new destinations to engage tourists and extend their stay in the country.

Nepal Tourism Board, as well as other government agencies and organizations, are aggressively promoting the campaign and Nepal as a tourism destination in foreign countries. Most of these agencies and organizations have put Visit Nepal Year 2020 campaign at the core of their international marketing and promotional exercises.

Established in 1966 with eight hotels as its members, HAN has chapters in Dhankuta, Biratnagar, Pokhara, Sauraha, Biratnagar, Dhulikhel, and Bhaktapur.
