LAMJUNG, Jan 12: The Tamang Community here has demanded to withdraw the public holiday declared by the government of January 18 on the occasion of Sonam Lhosar, citing Sonam Lhosar falls on February 16.
Sonam Lhosar is the New Year festival celebrated by the Tamang community.
The Tamang Ghedung Association, Lamjung, demanded this, organizing a press conference.
The Association urged the government to withdraw the public holiday declared for January 18, saying Sonam Lhosar, celebrated by Tamang community, falls on the very next day after the full moon day of the month of Magh (Magh Shukla Pratipada) as per the Manjushree calendar.
On the occasion, Association's District Executive Committee Chairman, Ajay Tamang, said the Sonam Lhosar has been mentioned on the wrong date in the official Nepali Calendar.
He said, "We will celebrate Sonam Lhosar on February 16, so the public holiday declared for January 18 is not necessary."
Tamang further said that Gyalbo Lhosar celebrated by Sherpa community also falls on February 16, so public holiday has already been declared on that day and no need to declare another holiday. RSS
