Kamlaris have been staging protests in the capital since a week demanding their proper rehabilitation and safety, among other points. On Tuesday, Kamlaris staged a sit-in at Hanumansthan in Anamnagar demanding action against the police personnel who they said used excessive force against Kamlaris to suppress their peaceful protest. Many Kamlaris were injured in the clash with the police on Sunday while they were staging a sit-in in front of Singha Durbar.
Around 700 Kamlaris from various districts, including Dang, Kailali, Banke, Bardiya and Kanchanpur had arrived in the capital with a mission two weeks ago. After the memorandum they handed to the government yielded no results, the girls started sit-in protests demanding proper rehabilitation of Kamlaris and their safety and protection in view of rising number of mysterious deaths of Kamlaris serving rich families. In the last 5 years, 5 Kamalaris who were working as domestic help for well-off families in the capital and outside were found dead with no proper investigation into their deaths.
The current agitation was, however, triggered by the death of a 12-year-old Srijana Chaudhari, who succumbed to burn injuries after being found severely burnt at the house of Yubaraj Paudel where she had been working as a domestic help.
