Govt forms probe committee on Dailekh incident

KATHMANDU, Jan. 24: The Ministry of Home Affairs has formed a four-member probe committee led by Laxmi Prasad Dhakal, Joint-secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, to investigate the incident that took place in Dailekh, on Wednesday.



The committee has been suggested to investigate the fact about the Dailekh incident and submit a report within the next seven days.[break]



The situation in Dailekh turned tense when senior personalities including Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai reached Dailekh to attend the district convention of the Unified CPN (Maoist), Dailekh.



Cadres of the UCPN-Maoist and opposition parties had pelted stones to each other and cadres of the Nepali Congress, CPN (UML), and other political parties even pelted stones at the UCPN-Maoist´s programme. Due to interference from the opposition parties, the UCPN-Maoist was forced to defer the programme for some time.



The Ministry has regretted over the arson made at the UCPN-Maoist Dailekh district party office and the clashes that ensued.



Meanwhile, the Nepal Press Union (NPU) issued a press statement regarding the Dailekh incident and said that the incident of attack on the office of ´Hamro Tesro Ankha Daily´ and warning to journalists in Dailekh had drawn its serious attention.



The statement termed the attack on media was an attack on the press freedom, rule of law, and people´s rights to get information and claimed that the UCPN-Maoist´s commitment for press freedom has turned out to be false.



The Press Union has urged the local administration to create environment for easily disseminating the news and provide compensation to the Daily and take those involved in the incident to book.
