The government decision comes in the wake of unscrupulous manpower agents increasingly using other airports in India to fly illegal Nepalese workers to various labor destinations after authorities in India tightened vigilance at the New Delhi Airport.[break]
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) Arjun Bahadur Thapa said they have already sent a letter to this effect to Nepalese embassy in New Delhi. “The embassy has been asked to request the Indian External Affairs Ministry to help check illegal migration of Nepali workers to third countries via India unless they produce no objection letter from Nepal´s embassy in New Delhi,” he said.
Earlier, Nepal had asked the Indian authorities not to allow Nepali workers to fly for foreign job destinations from the New Delhi Airport if they failed to produce labor permit and no objection letter from Nepal´s embassy in New Delhi.
Unscrupulous manpower agents, however, have been found to be using Mumbai and Bangalore airports to fly Nepali workers to foreign job destinations.
Nepal´s ambassador to Saudi Arabia Udaya Raj Pandey said the trend of Nepali workers illegally flying to various Gulf countries has shown no signs of abating.
Though the number of male workers illegally flying to job destinations has come down lately, the number of such female workers has been on the rise. The government has not opened Saudi Arabia as a labor destination for female workers yet. However, it is estimated that over 70,000 female workers from Nepal are illegally working in Saudi Arabia alone.
Ambassador Pandey said he helped a total 7,990 Nepali female workers illegally working in Saudi Arabia to return home since he assumed office 14 months ago.
Government officials say they have found that the unscrupulous manpower agents have started using Dhaka-Oman route as well in recent days to fly Nepali workers illegally to various labor destinations. The government is also mulling to make a similar request to Dhaka to prevent Nepali workers from illegally flying to various labor destinations.
