KATHMANDU, Dec 23: The government has taken the statement issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Nepal on Monday as positive and encouraging.
“The government believes that these positive gestures from a friendly neighbor would be helpful in normalizing the existing situation as well as restoring normalcy to the supply system across the Nepal-India border,” reads a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.
The Indian ministry in its statement welcomed the Nepal government’s decision to address the demands of the agitating Madhes-based political parties.
An emergency cabinet meeting on Sunday had endorsed a three-point political roadmap, which was earlier agreed upon among the major political parties.
The Indian government termed the latest developments a positive step that will help create the basis for a resolution of the current impasse in Nepal.
The government has decided to move forward the constitution amendment bill which includes a provision ensuring proportional inclusive representation in state organs and commits to delimiting the electoral constituencies on the basis of population.
The amendment also states that there shall be at least one electoral constituency in each of the existing 75 districts.
On resolving the disputes related to demarcation of provinces, the government has decided to form a high-level political mechanism that will recommend solutions within three months of its inception.
Meanwhile, Indian ambassador to Nepal Ranjeet Rae called on Speaker Onsari Gharti at Singha Durbar on Tuesday.
The Indian ambassador enquired about the progress in endorsing the bill to amend the new constittution that has already been tabled in parliament, according to a statement issued by the Speaker’s secretariat Tuesday.
During the meeting, they also discussed various issues surrounding Nepal-India bilateral relations and Indian assistance to Nepal in various sectors.
Meanwhile, Israel’s ambassador to Nepal Yaron Mayer and North Korean ambassador Kim Yong Hak also called on Speaker Gharti on Tuesday. She discussed various aspects of bilateral relations with both ambassadors, reads the statement.
