KATHMANDU, Nov 9: The government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court (SC) seeking the cancellation of an interim order that exempts the national identity card from being mandatory for social security allowances and other purposes.
A bench of Justices Manoj Kumar Sharma and Til Prasad Shrestha on August 23 had issued an interim order exempting the national identity card requirement. In response, the Office of the Attorney General filed a petition in the apex court on Friday, requesting the cancellation of the interim order.

The government argues that implementing the national identity card would help control duplication of social security allowances, ensure uniformity in personal identification, and prevent offenders from evading detection.
Citing these reasons, the government has urged that the interim order not hinder the rollout of the national identity card. It has called for the cancellation of the order to allow the continued implementation of the national identity card.
