A DRI official told myrepublica.com that a team of DRI last week seized about 100 sacks of PVC dust, which is used in manufacturing plastic goods, five cartons of Indian can beer manufactured by Okocim, six HP laptops and several sacks of clothes imported to Kathmandu in cargo flights by Budda Air and Yeti Airlines.
Similarly, 20 sacks of readymade chewing tobacco, which were originally imported from Biratnagar and were about to dispatched to Bharatpur, were also detained.
Since the airline companies have failed to produce airways bill as the proof that the goods were imported legally, there is a possibility that the goods were first imported to Nepal through illegal channels and then flown to Kathmandu from Biratnagar, said the official.
Some of the original owners of the goods detained have contacted the DRI and we have told them to first contact concerned airline companies to claim their cargo, the official said adding that DRI has already started the process to seek statements from the representatives of the concerned airline companies.
