Glorious veggies

Let's admit it, vegetables are not all that fun to eat. Apart from a few fun vegetables, like some raw sliced cool cucumbers in the summer, with a paste of salt and green chilies slathered on it, or some cilantro and tomato achaar that go with your momos. But for the most part, you don't particularly see anyone ecstatic to see all the fresh vegetables laid out at the tarkari bazaar.

Vegetables may not be fun to eat, but they are extremely important to have in ones daily diet. And I'm not talking about making vegetables a side of condiment on your plate, but instead, the star of your meal, in every single meal. Vegetables truly are the best source of vitamins, minerals, and disease fighting phyto-chemicals. You should be getting at least five servings of vegetables per day, but I'd ideally encourage you to eat about ten servings of veggies per day.


The best part about eating a lot of vegetables regularly is that they provide a wide array of nutrients such as vitamin B, folate, and niacin among others. Vegetables also are loaded with antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, lutein, lycopene, and countless other phytonutrients. These micro-nutrients are amazing for our health.

Green leafy vegetables such as mustard greens, spinach and cilantro are loaded with magnesium, which help balance stress hormones. Magnesium also helps absorb calcium, which isn't only important for strong bones, but also provides proper nerve function, and a healthy immune system. Vegetables that contain beta-carotene, such as pumpkin and carrots help repair the tissues of our bodies. Beta-carotene may also help protect our skin against sun damage, and reduces the risk of developing inflammatory diseases such as arthritis.

In addition to vitamins, vegetables contain fiber. Fiber not only helps keep you full and controls hunger wonderfully, but it also stabilizes blood sugar levels, giving you a steady level of energy. Fiber, as we all know it, is one of the most crucial factors in our elimination health.

Fiber is also a key ingredient in helping you lose the few extra kilos you might have on you. According to Brenda Watson, one gram of fiber burns an extra seven calories. That means if you eat your six to eight servings of vegetables per day, like you are supposed to, you should easily get about 35 grams of fiber, and burn two hundred and forty-five calories without lifting a finger. That would equal to a nine kilos loss of fat in the course of a year!

A really easy way to get an extra load of vegetables is by making green smoothies. You can soak your vegetables and fruits in vinegar and water for about fifteen minutes, and then put it in the blender with water, and drink it down. My favorite recipe is throwing a banana, some spinach, almonds, a deseeded orange (or any other juicy fruit) and some almonds, water as needed, and blending it all up to make a deliciously nutritious smoothie. Green smoothies are amazing for health, and you can even play around with the ingredients.

So load up on those vegetables, and not only will you have amazing health, but a slim figure, glowing skin, lovely hair, and also bounds of energy. There is no supplement that is as powerful. So just eat your vegetables, because you will love the way you feel and look afterwards.
