Global children's declaration to protect kids from disaster

KATHMANDU, May 16: Keeping in mind the fact that more than 50 percent children become victims of several types of disasters and to save the next generation from disaster risks and control it, a global children’s declaration has been issued.



The Third Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction that concluded in Geneva last week issued a five-point Children’s Charter consulting more than 600 children of Asia, Africa and Latin America.[Break]



The declaration stresses on safe schools; conducting classes smoothly; first priority to children before, during and after disasters; and access of children to information and guaranteeing their rights to participation.



Similarly, it emphasizes safe infrastructure in community, speedy rescue work and reconstruction and disaster reduction measures’ reach in vulnerable communities.



In the global forum’s meeting of children, Pilipino children, Andre and Transia and Johnson of Kenya, representing children in the platform, stressed for conducting classes on disaster risk reduction in schools and participation of children in reduction.



Similarly, Director of SAARC Disaster Management Centre Dr. D.P. Chakravarty informed that a 10-point SAARC action plan has been prepared to save South Asian children from disaster risks and ensure their participation in reduction.



According to Dr. Chakrawarty, the action plan includes evaluation of risk that children face in disaster, safe evacuation of children during disaster, prioritization of search and rescue, guarantee of food security and nutrition, arrangement of water, sanitation and health facilities and emergency treatment.



It also stressed for children-friendly reconstruction work, protection of children during disaster, disaster education and proper participation of children in disaster risk reduction.
