Dr Ben Carson, a world-renowned neurosurgeon and a failed US presidential candidate, dealt with hatred, racism and bullying. Yet he became one of the most acclaimed neurosurgeons of all time.

Gifted Hands is a true story of Dr Ben Carson’s life. He grew up in a poor family and his father abandoned the family when Carson was very young. Carson’s mother single handedly raised him and his brother. Carson was not a very bright student and if it wasn’t for his mothers words of encouragement, he wouldn’t be what he is today. As an African American growing up in the United States of America in the late 80s, Carson faced racism.

Carson attended the University of Michigan Medical School and became the first ever doctor to separate a conjoined twins. This is one of the most complex surgeries.

The book is written in such a way that I felt as if I was growing up with Carson himself. The emotion and the tone help the reader understand what Carson went through as a child.

However, the book has too any details of the person. Overall, Gifted Hands is a fantastic autobiography that has the capacity to motivate everyone.
