As soon as you enter Nepal Knotcraft Center at Kupondole in Patan, you will get a strong aroma of grasses. This little store dates back to 1983 and has been producing various handicrafts from Nepali dolls made from cornhusk and waste materials to hammocks and pot hangers ever since.

Established by Shyam Badan Shrestha, Nepal Knotcraft Center’s focus has always been the empowerment of women through the creation of jobs for them. [break]And their latest venture has been the creation of fiber weave items for home and office interiors which goes by the name of Fiber Weave Nepal.

“We’ve been focusing on grass fiber weave products for the past four and a half years now,” informs marketing personnel Muna Nakarmi. “Our products are unique because we are using grass for our raw materials, something that would have gone to waste. It is not only eco-friendly but also unique in design,” she further states. Made locally in the Patan Industrial Estate, Fiber Weave Nepal employs women to create their pieces.

Stacked on the shelves that stretch all around the store are table runners, placemats, floor mats, tea coasters, baskets, trays, stools, blinds, lamp shades and more. “A lot of research is done before manufacturing each item in order to ensure its durability and quality,” adds Nakarmi, adding that Fiber Weave Nepal uses Rivercross grass, which is brought from outside the Kathmandu Valley.

The grass is dyed using vegetable dye or left in its natural color. “Customers can choose from natural, brown, green and black colors,” Nakarmi says further. In terms of the weave they do three different kinds – Simple, Kathmandu and Twine, of which Kathmandu weave is the most expensive due to its complicated technique.

“Mats made from straw tend to fall apart but because these are made from grass they last very long,” points Nakarmi claims. “Sometimes when we have orders for huge mats, we go to people’s homes and have them made in the space there itself.” While the length of the mat has no limits, a handloom can weave up to a width of 86 inches.

“It is the more environmentally conscious customers who opt for fiber weave pieces these days,” puts in the marketing executive. Apart from that, customers are also looking to add a Nepali touch to their homes with fiber weave creations.

“Our most popular item is the round sitting cushion,” highlights Nakarmi. Available in various sizes these comfortable and sturdy fiber weave cushions are filled with foam in the inside and range from Rs 1000 to 3000, per piece.

Other unique products of Fiber Weave Nepal are wooden stools and wrought iron framed tables with storage spaces, and beautifully crafted Sanduks (storage boxes). All of these can add that distinctive touch to your interiors and make wonderful gifts as well.
