KATHMANDU, Oct 22: For the past 15 years, the production and use of wind energy based on forest resources has increased. A study conducted by National Forum for Advocacy Nepal (NAFAN) in collaboration with Global Forest Coalition and Environmental Paper Network has shown that.

According to the Bio Energy Supply Report (2020), the use of Bio Energy has increased by three times in 2020 compared to the year 2000. According to the report, converting biomass into fuel contributes negatively to the climate. In the rural areas of Nepal, 77 percent of the fuel is obtained from firewood and cow dung, which are discarded from agricultural fields, the report states.

In Nepal, about 10 biomass energy companies are producing and marketing forest-based energy (biocrete, pellets, etc.). Some of these have started production with the goal of pellet production at the industrial level by making an agreement with the government on the collection and use of biomass in the forest. It is mentioned in the report that this act is not sustainable and it also increases forest destruction. While making biomass from grass, leaves and twigs, it is found that people even destroy plants and trees in the forest.

The report suggested that the Biomass Energy Strategy, 2017 should be scrapped immediately and a new energy policy should be formulated after extensive discussion and consultation. It also states that the commercialization of wind energy, which is traditionally used, should be stopped immediately, and the removal of the right of communities dependent on forest resources over fuel should be stopped.
