The theme for Women's Day this year (March 8) is "Invest in women: Accelerate progress," complemented by the campaign theme, "Inspire Inclusion”. In celebration of the 34th International Women’s Day in Nepal, Republica has curated a collection of 34 inspiring stories showcasing unwavering courage, resilience, and empowerment of women below the age of 34. These stories are not merely personal; they wield a profound impact, shaping the lives of those who share them. They unfold as tales of courage, resilience, and empowerment.
Sarita Khanal, the owner of 'Nilsagar Sewa Ashram,' grew up in Baghaiyatal-2 Shiva Shaktipur, Bardiya. Her parents hoped she would secure a good government job after completing her studies. However, Khanal’s life took a different turn after her brother, Bidur, tragically passed away in a car accident on 15 December, 2015. Before his death, Bidur often talked about opening an old age home to serve the less fortunate. His words resonated with Khanal even more after his passing.

Driven by her brother's dream, Khanal took the bold step of opening 'Nilsagar Sewa Ashram' near BP Chowk in Nepalgunj on 28 September, 2016, despite facing challenges and operating without formal permission at first. "I still remember starting the ashram with nine elderly residents; it was a tough journey in the beginning," recalls Khanal.
Today, the ashram provides shelter to 225 children, the destitute, and senior citizens in its main office in Nepalgunj alone. Additionally, branches of the ashram have been established at about half a dozen other locations. Since its inception, the ashram has facilitated the reunification of 3,200 individuals with their families. Khanal, now 33 years old, mentions proudly, "We have also conducted 214 cremations for those who passed away in the ashram."
Sarita's dedication to her brother's vision has brought comfort and support to countless individuals in need, embodying the spirit of compassion and service.
